Workplace Alcohol Harm Reduction
An occupational health, safety and productivity initiative.
Proposed initiative · Concept stageWhy it matters
Protecting people and performance go hand in hand.
Zambia faces growing concern over the wide availability of inexpensive, highly potent alcoholic beverages, including products sold through informal and unregulated outlets near schools and workplaces. This may increase exposure to alcohol-related harm among working-age people.
Depending on the circumstances, alcohol use can contribute to workplace accidents and injuries, absenteeism, impaired judgement, reduced productivity and alcohol-related illness — with real costs for employees and employers alike.
These concerns are often treated as purely personal or public health matters. ACZ believes their implications for workplace safety and organisational performance deserve greater attention from the corporate sector — and that protecting employees and safeguarding business interests are complementary goals.
The proposed approach
How the initiative would work
- 01
One-day workshop
Bringing together HR, occupational health and safety and corporate representatives to examine alcohol-related risks at work and explore practical responses.
- 02
Workplace-level interventions
Follow-up within participating organisations, shaped around each workplace’s own needs, policies and people.
- 03
Lusaka first, then beyond
Beginning in Lusaka Province, with the potential to extend the initiative to other provinces.
Please note: this is a proposed initiative. No workshops have yet taken place; dates, venues and participating organisations will be agreed with interested employers.
